On March 27, 2026, World Theatre Day, the cultural and exhibition center “L. N. T.” will open the exhibition “Tolstoy’s Theater.” The project is organized jointly with the Tula State Academic Drama Theatre named after Maxim Gorky and is dedicated to Tolstoy’s theatrical legacy.

“Yasnaya Polyana and the Tula Drama Theatre have maintained close ties for many years. This exhibition traces the development of Tolstoy’s dramaturgy—from amateur performances at the estate to professional productions on stages in various cities, including Tula,” says curator Anna Grishina.

The exhibition will feature costumes and set designs from productions of Anna Karenina, The Strider, Resurrection, Two Hussars, and others. The earliest item dates back to 1937: a unique lady-in-waiting dress from a Moscow Art Theatre production of Anna Karenina. The most recent pieces are from contemporary productions at the Tula Drama Theatre.

Additional materials include historical photographs, theater posters, archival documents from the Society of Russian Dramatic Writers and Opera Composers, books, theater journals, and newspapers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors will also see a program from a 1911 performance of The Living Corpse, attended by Sofya Tolstaya, bearing her handwritten note.
