Festivals and Holidays

You are welcome to attend open-air festivals and holidays, which are regularly organized by Yasnaya Polyana for its numerous visitors. Our festivals - the annual Nettle Festival and the Garden of Geniuses Festival, and the biannual Motley Glade Festival – have already become popular among the public. Following old Russian customs and traditions of the Tolstoy family, Christmas, Shrovetide, and Whitsunday are also celebrated here every year.

International Art and Literature Festival “Garden of Geniuses”

The festival is held annually since 2010 as part of the international project «Garden of geniuses”. Garden of Geniusesis a long-term European project initiated by Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana and Tolstoy HeritageInternational Fund to preserve the significance of classical literature. It is based on the literary heritage of seven European writers: Victor Hugo, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, William Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, Migel Cervantes, James Joyce and Leo Tolstoy.

International Nettle Festival

Since 2003, the Nettle Festival has been organized annually at the village of Krapivna by the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-estate. The Festival was established at a time when there was growing interest in Russian provincial life and history while the provinces had almost lost their special atmosphere and character, influenced by contemporary life. It is hard to overestimate the role of the province in Russian history: many outstanding figures came from small towns, and many famous classical works of literature and art were created in the country estates, far from the capital. Krapivna – now a village, but formerly a town and a district center in the Tula Province – still preserves its local provincial colour. It has its own history, and its own legend.
