International Literary Project «Garden of Geniuses»

Joint project of Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana and chain of partnership European organizations

Garden of Geniuses is a long-term European project initiated by Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana and Tolstoy Heritage International Fund to preserve the significance of classical literature. As Leo Tolstoy wrote great art objects are great only because they are comprehensible for everybody.

genius_garden1Still being great these objects have unfortunately become less available for a contemporary reader as trivial and vulgar fiction is widely promoted, as literature in schools is oppressively and tediously taught and as a lot of alternatives to classical literature reading have recently appeared.

Supporting the value of the literary word and deep thought embodied in the masterpieces of the great writers, Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana and Tolstoy Heritage International Fund initiated Garden of Geniuses project which unites the readers of classical literature from around the world.

The project, originally launched by three partners in 2007 (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Government of Weimar and Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana), is now based on the literary heritage of seven European writers:

  • Dante Alighieri
  • Miguel de Cervantes
  • William Shakespeare
  • JohannWolfgang Goethe
  • Victor Hugo
  • Leo Tolstoy
  • James Joyce

As several classical writers were added to the initial three, the number of the partners also increased. At the moment Garden of Geniuses is being developed by the following partners working with the literary heritage of the authors involved in the project:

  • The University of Florence, Italy
  • The Cervantes Birthplace Museum at Alcalá de Henares, Spain
  • Vice-Directorate of Museums, Regional Government of Madrid, Spain
  • The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust at Stratford-upon-Avon, Great Britain
  • Victor Hugo’s Friends Society at Paris, France
  • National Goethe Museum and Goethe House at Weimar, Germany
  • City Government of Weimar, Germany
  • Leo Tolstoy museum-estate at Yasnaya Polyana, Russia
  • The James Joyce Centre at Dublin, Ireland

Leo Tolstoy museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana as the initiator of the project and cooperation of the European museums sets several goals:

  • preserving the significance of classical literature
  • joining the important European literary museums into the network for exchanging ideas and experience on the development of the museums as touristic, educational and researching centres
  • cultural development of the regions where the literary museums are situated
  • attract more visitors to the museums and perfecting their image as modern and cultural centres

Arranging International Art and Literature Festivals as central events of the project, Garden of Geniuses partners oppose the uniting power of art and literature to material interest which separates people. Composing Festival programme, its organisers expect to cover vast interests of the audience, meanwhile treating them not simply as film and contemporary dramatic art fans, but also as true and prospector readers of the world classics. Properly speaking, the main aim of Garden of Geniuses project, that merges judges of classics from different countries and strives to increase their number, lies in restoring significance of the Word.
