Shrovetide Program

The Yasnaya Polyana Museum invites children and their parents to participate in an outdoor interactive Shrovetide program. The celebrations will take place on February 17 and 18, 2018 at the Yasnaya Polyana estate grounds (near the Coachman‘s House).

We will show you how to celebrate Shrovetide according to folk traditions. As if going through all the days of the Shrovetide week, you will participate in old games and contests. The Shrovetide figure, stilts, “cock-fighting,” and delicious pancakes in a traditional Russian house are waiting for you!

Cost of a ticket – 500 rubles

February 17, 2018 – 11:00, 12:30, 14:00;

February 18, 2018 – 11:00, 12:30, 14:00.

In addition, upon request, a workshop on making the traditional small (home) Shrovetide doll can be added to the program.

In Tula Region, in addition to the big Shrovetide figure (Maslenitsa), which was made by all the villagers and put on the central square, and later burned on the Sunday of Forgiveness, a small doll was also made – the so-called home Maslenitsa. It was made on the basis of a wooden cross wrapped in bast or straw, then dressed in bright clothes imitating the folk costume, and decorated with a braid and colored ribbons. Such a doll was usually placed on the windowsill. Seeing a doll in his mother-in-law’s window, the son-in-law knew it was time to visit her to eat pancakes. The home Maslenitsa was preserved and later placed in the icon corner, behind the icon. People believed the doll would bring happiness and prosperity to the house. We offer everybody the chance to make their own Maslenitsa dolls, which will bring them happiness.

Cost of a workshop ticket – 100 rubles
