Results of the Volunteer Camp

On July 12, 2017, the international ecological volunteer camp finished its work at Yasnaya Polyana. During the two weeks of their stay, the camp participants managed to help our museum in its preservation of the historic and natural heritage and to acquire new cultural experience and get acquainted with Yasnaya Polyana and the history of Tula Region. In addition, the participants from foreign countries were attracted by the possibility to study and discover for themselves Russian culture in general – from everyday culture to sightseeing. At Yasnaya Polyana, the volunteers looked after the nursery of fir trees; removed weeds in the Old Zakaz forest, along the path leading to Leo Tolstoy’s grave; participated in the restoration of the authentic look of the Old Abramovskaya Grove (1874) and Little Firs Grove (1889); and helped to gather clay for use in making the Yasnaya Polyana ceramics souvenirs.

Work on the estate, socializing in the evenings, and a cultural program on weekends – all this enabled the volunteers, according to their own words, to "get lots of impressions," "explore Russian culture," "discover a different Tolstoy,” "meet employees who are enthusiastic about their work," and "feel the atmosphere of hospitality."

We are pleased with the success of the joint project of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum and World4U ( and hope it will be continued in 2018.

The project team thank all the participants in the ecological camp for their contribution to the preservation of the historical and natural heritage of the Tolstoy estate and express special appreciation to volunteer Anna Glotova, a camp leader of the foreign participants‘ group!
